He was married to his first wife Mary Anne, a member of the same family, and they married in a small Illinois town in the mid-19th century at the age of 18.

After her husband was a captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps, they lived in Waukegan, IL, and made it their longtime home. After their retirement, Artie and Nancy moved to South Carolina, where they volunteered at Family Promise in Anderson.

Artie joined the local band Juke Box 45, mentoring young musicians and playing in local bands such as the South Carolina United Methodist Church Band. He also played and sang with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in Chicago, played in a number of other bands in the area and mentored younger musicians.

Art was also a member of IUOE Local 150 and retired in 2011 after 25 years as superintendent of Curran Contracting in Crystal Lake. Artie will be fondly remembered by his wife of 50 years, his adopted daughter and his two sons. His death was preceded by two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild, all of whom he loved.

A celebration of Artie's life will be held on Saturday, March 26, from 1 p.m. at St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Crystal Lake, presided over by the Rev. Brian K. Walter. He is survived by his wife, 50, two sons, two daughters and a son-in-law, as well as two grandchildren.

He travelled to Europe with his daughter Laura and went on holiday to Germany with her best friend Sylvia Wirtanen. His family vacations included stays in New York City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago and New Jersey. Janet loved to go ice cream and grab a cone at Waukegan Harbor, where she would enjoy her ice cream - cream on the pier.
