The Great Lakes Naval Museum is a small military museum that shows the history of the U.S. Navy, Navy and Marine Corps. Two exhibits are the USS Michigan and the United States Naval Air Station at Lake Michigan, both housed in the museum building.
For seniors, there's the Illinois Great Lakes Center, where the great comedian Bob Hope learned to entertain America's troops. Glencoe is located halfway between Chicago and Gurnee, so it's a great option if you're going on a day trip to the city or staying at the Great Wolf Lodge. This beautiful 385-acre garden is actually a nature trail, one of the oldest and most popular nature trails in the state of Illinois. It was a surprise when we first went there that there was free parking and that there was a fun and interesting nature museum in the house.

The National Museum of the American Sailor is a great way to learn more about the US Navy. They have many collections in the museum, including the USS George Washington, the USS John F. Kennedy and many others.
Although the museum is only open on Fridays and weekends, the first 30 minutes of each day are reserved for seniors and vulnerable people. Lincoln Park Zoo is free for families making a reservation in advance by calling 312-742-2000. Special events at the zoo, such as the annual Chicago Day of the Animals and the Illinois State Fair, require staggered tickets.
